There are reports that up to nine crew have been kidnapped in a pirate attack on a container ship in the Gulf of Guinea, some 48nm southwest of Equatorial Guinea.
Few details are available at this time – there are reports that the attack is still underway – however, a Danish Navy vessel is en route to the scene of the attack.
The ship that was boarded is thought to be the 21-year old Tonsberg, which was chartered by the French carrier CMA CGM in June this year.
The 5,551 teu vessel was headed for Cotonou, Benin after departing from the Cameroon facility Port Autonome de Kribi on 12 December according to VesselsValue data.
According to the eeSea liner database, the vessel is deployed on CMA CGM’s Asia-West Africa WAX service jointly operated with Maersk.
The owner is the Greece-based company Technomar.
