Splash 247 reports The Indian Coast Guard spent the best part of 16 hours dousing a blaze from a containership, the latest in a long string of fires on boxships that have likely originated from misdeclared or poorly packed cargoes.
The coast guard was alerted to the fire that had broken out on one container on the anchored X-Press Godavari yesterday morning.
Four vessels were dispatched to the anchorage off Sandheads, which is over a 100 km away from the Haldia port in West Bengal. Firefighting operations continued through much of last night on the 917 teu ship.
Now under control, the vessel has been escorted to Kolkata to assess damage onboard.
