The maritime sector is already the most efficient way of moving goods around the planet. The international shipping industry is responsible for the carriage of around 90% of world trade.
There are over 50,000 merchant ships trading internationally, registered in over 150 countries, and operated by over a million seafarers of every nationality. The seaborne trade industry is furthermore expected to grow by 160 to 250 percent over the next three decades.
